Southwell City U12 Girls win the Autumn Winter League!

Our Under 12 Girls completed their league campaign at the weekend, beating West Bridgford 4-0 to become champions of the Autumn-Winter league division 2. Goals from Gracie Garrat (2), Mia Buckle and leading goal scorer Mollie Harris sealed victory for the team.

This latest success builds on a short but sparkling history for the team. Last season the girls won the development division and the league’s Respect award. This season the girls have continued to play the game in the right spirit, showing themselves to be great ambassadors for the sport and the town of Southwell.

A massive well done to the whole team and the best of luck for the rest of the season ahead!

Top FA Coach joins Southwell City

As part of its ongoing development programme, Southwell City will be working with an FA Coach Mentor to help further improve the level of football coaching within the club.

Steve Thompson joins the club for this season with a wealth of experience as a mentor, having worked with both professional and grassroots coaches and players.

Steve will spend a set number of hours over the course of the season working with the club. His appointment has been funded by the FA Coach Mentor Programme as part of its commitment to improve coaching in grassroots football by helping coaches to develop knowledge, confidence and skills.

Steve said, “My role is to improve and help to support grassroots coaching. At Southwell City, I will be working with groups of coaches to help them improve their coaching. I will also be working with individual coaches who feel that they want to move on to the next level.”

Richard Wilson, speaking on behalf of Southwell City, said, “Bringing Steve in has been like a breath of fresh air for me. His enthusiasm for the club is absolutely tremendous.  I am sure the level of coaching in the club is going to rise under Steve’s guidance and hopefully we will be able to maintain that legacy once Steve has left.”

City U12’s All Kitted Out

Southwell City’s two U12 boys football teams will be looking all the smarter this season as they will both be wearing new Nike football kits, supplied by McDonalds.

The football club has benefited from a scheme that has seen the fast food giant offering free football kits to FA Chartered Standard teams such as City.

Launched in 2001, the FA Charter Standard Programme is the FA’s accreditation scheme for grassroots clubs and leagues. The award is given to clubs that are rigorously adjudged to be well-run and sustainable – and which prioritise child protection, quality coaching and implementation of the Respect programme.

For nearly a decade, City has been an FA Community Club – this is highest level available under the FA’s Charter Standard program.  Today, the club continues to build on this firm foundation and is now one of the biggest in the county, with over 30 boys, girls and adult teams.

This season, the club will be working closely with an FA Coach Mentor in order to further increase the quality of coaching throughout the club.

Another successful season for Southwell City Romans

It’s been another enjoyable season for Southwell City Romans U11’s. For the second year running they finished in a trophy position in the league. This time they finished runners up in a very competitive YEL Spring League campaign, finishing off in style with an 8-1 victory over East Leake.

More important than the results though has been the style and quality of football played by the team over the course of the season. With a strong emphasis being placed on passing football, they were a very enjoyable team to watch at times. Well done boys!
