Southwell City Swans Under 12s girls football team soared to victory in a nail bitter of a final to win the Nottinghamshire Girls Cup 4.
Played in front of a packed crowd at the Radford and Hymas Academy, Mansfield Town’s training centre, the Swans saw off Eastwood Town in a closely fought contest. With the game level 0-0 at the end of normal time, the Swans held their nerve to emerge victorious 3-1 on penalties.
The Swans had the edge throughout the game and pushed for a goal but were thwarted by Eastwood’s goalkeeper and a nerve shredding penalty shoot out beckoned.
Ivy Van Der Sande, Thea Parry and Lily Womack coolly buried their penalties, whereas goalkeeper, Louise Buckley, saved three of Eastwood’s. Cue celebrations from the girls and parents, as captain, Ella Cook, hoisted the trophy.
Manager, Dan Cook, said “Southwell City Swans formed at the beginning of the season so I’m proud of the girls. Each of our 15 players contributed enormously and come to training and games with endless enthusiasm. Their victory was richly deserved.”
The Swans beat teams from Lowdham, Quarrydale and Clipstone to take their place in the final.
